Celebrate Bob Marley's Birthday With These Live Shows
February 2, 2016
The legend Bob Marley would have been 71 years old on February 6. Though the revolutionary reggae artist is no longer with us on Earth, his spirit is alive in the music. There are lots of reggae and roots shows in the area this month.
Here are Dahday’s picks to get lifted with Marley’s legendary hits and enjoy the best of today’s reggae artists:
Friday, February 5 at 7pm: Bob Marley Celebration with New Kingston at Gramercy Theatre, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
This band of Brooklyn Jamaicans is crossing the bridge to perform at Manhattan’s Gramercy Theatre, performing its brand of dancehall and hip hop-influenced reggae. You may hear a Marley classic or two but this show provides you a youthful, modern take at reggae music.
Friday, February 5 at 11pm: Vaughn Benjamin of Midnite presents The Akae Beka at S.O.B.’s, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
If you want to enjoy the traditional, slow groovin’, Rasta-inspired sound of reggae music in celebration of Bob Marley, check out the Virgin Islands-born Vaughn Benjamin and Akae Beka on Friday night, February 5. This late night show takes places at S.O.B.’s, the time-honored capitol of Caribbean and world grooves performances in New York City — where the dance floor and standing room sits in front of the seated, eating customers.
Sunday, February 6 at 4pm: Bob Marley Birthday Tribute Family Matinee with CCG Reggae Band at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
If you are looking to stay away from a smoky club late at night, consider this family-focused show at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, a venue located in the heart of Times Square. For sure, you will get all the inspiring Marley hits. You can take your children and sing along to “One Love” and still be home for bedtime.
Wednesday, February 17 at 8pm: The Wailers performing Babylon By Bus at Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
Thursday, February 18 at 8pm: The Wailers performing Kaya at Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
Save his family, you can’t get any more a direct connection to Marley’s legacy than The Wailers. Enjoy one or both of these back-to-back shows in this unique B.K. venue, where the stage sits next to a row of bowling lanes. You can hang in the dance floor and enjoy the show or call to reserve a lane and rock out while you are rolling over some ten pins.
Wednesday, February 24 at 9pm: Morgan Heritage and Blackalicious at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
The Royal Family of Reggae, Morgan Heritage stands for the essence of reggae music. Like Vaughn Benjamin and Akae Beka’s show, expect at this live show a straight-no-chaser reggae and roots sound, including their own hits from the late 90s and early 2000s.
