Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend Has Knockout Options!

New York City the first weekend in June means usually one thing: the National Puerto Rican Day Parade – and also, usually, a major Puerto Rican boxer fighting at Madison Square Garden.

Lo Mejor De Los 90s/The Best of the 90s Salsa Concert – June 7 at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.
This salsa concert provides a mix of island salseros – Jerry Rivera, Andy Montañez, Eddie Santiago and Tito Rojas – as well as 90s stateside favorites like New York City’s Willie Colon and La India and Newark, New Jersey native Frankie Negron. Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez – June 7 at Madison Square Garden, New York, N.Y.
In a quest to win yet another world title, the pride of Caguas, PR takes on Argentine legend Sergio Martinez for a tremendous middleweight championship match-up. Cotto’s home away from home certainly has been the world’s most famous arena. After two tough losses to Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather, this match up at Madison Square Garden against the tremendously talented Martinez could be Cotto’s last best chance to add a significant win to a Hall of Fame-caliber resume. This fight is indeed a hot ticket.


Call Me Esteban Only – June 6-8 at Pregones Theater, Bronx, N.Y.
Pregones, New York City’s oldest Latino theater company which recently merged with Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, provides a musical theater alternative to celebrate Puerto Rican culture this June weekend. Pregones will debut a musical called Call Me Esteban Only, which tells the story of a Nuyorican astronaut on his last mission to space. You can catch this musical’s final performances June 5-8. My Superhero Robert Clemente – June 7 at 3pm at Teatro SEA – New York, N.Y.
Teatro SEA is the pre-eminent bilingual children’s theater company in the region. Founder Manuel Moran once produced a play based on the life of baseball legend Roberto Clemente for adult audiences. This new musical production celebrating Clemente’s life is geared towards children. SEA’s theater in the Lower East Side of Manhattan provides an intimate setting guaranteed for the whole family to enjoy. For this show, if your son or daughter dresses in full little league uniform, they get in free!

116th Street Festival – June 7 from 11am to 7pm at 116th Street at 3rd Avenue, New York, N.Y.
If you are more a fan of attending a street music festival than a parade, this 29th annual event touches all the bases – lots of food vendors, large sponsored activity booths, merchandise and craft tents and free live performances all afternoon. Artists to see include comedian Gabriel Iglesias and Lumidee.


Comite Patriotico Cultural Puertorriqueño – June 6-8 at Rudyk Park, Perth Amboy, N.J.
If you are a Jersey guy or girl, Perth Amboy’s celebration of Puerto Rican culture takes place the same weekend. Particularly Saturday and Sunday will serve up food vendors and local performers in the afternoon, capped off by merenguero Tony Tun Tun on Saturday night and salsero Jerry Rivera on Sunday night. The concerts are absolutely free. To ensure you see Tun Tun or Rivera, make sure to arrive at Rudyk Park by 7pm.




International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend – June, 6-8 at Boxing Hall and OnCenter, Canastota and Syracuse, N.Y.
If you prefer to take a drive that weekend, head to a hamlet in Central New York for a special celebration of Puerto Rican accomplishment in boxing. Felix “Tito” Trinidad is being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The weekend’s festivities include a Friday night event with Puerto Rican boxing legends, like presumably Trinidad and definitely boxers like Juan LaPorte. Then on Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy a gala celebrating all the inductees – including Trinidad’s Mexican American rival Oscar De La Hoya – then check out the official ceremony on Sunday. Though the gala and VIP events are sold out, the outside Sunday induction ceremony is free to the public.
