Roots Picnic – May 31, Festival Pier (Penn’s Landing), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Started before this Philly crew was Jimmy Fallon’s house band, the picnic has grown to become a regional must-see for hip hop and Indy music lovers. This year Snoop Dogg will be backed by The Roots on a set. Janelle Monae, Action Bronson and Araabmuzik are scheduled to perform.

Governor’s Ball Music Festival – June 6-8, Randall’s Island, New York, New York
So if you don’t travel to Inland Empire, California, then you can still catch OutKast at this music festival located on that strange piece of real estate between Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. Not only is there a free water station and face painting, there will be hot hip hop acts like Childish Gambino, J. Cole and Tyler, The Creator. That Janelle Monae takes this stage this year also makes it worth exploring a festival payment plan.

Essence Festival – July 3-6, New Orleans, Louisiana
If his presence in the post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl didn’t get you excited, then Prince’s Friday July 4th performance at this year’s Essence Festival will. The most sought-after music festival for Black America, the lineup provides a diverse menu of Black artists – from Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Lionel Richie and Charlie Wilson to Naughty By Nature, Eve and Doug E. Fresh.

North Sea Jazz Festival – August 29-30, Piscadera Bay near Willemstad, Curacao
This small island off the northern Venezuelan coast has the ultimate R&B and Latin music combo festival. If you like both genres, this is the perfect place to be. During the day you can hit the beaches, gamble a little in Willemstad and at night soak in Juan Luis Guerra, local Papiamentu-language acts and Bruno Mars.

Bruno Mars and Juan Luis Guerra in the same festival! Yeah, I know it’s awesome. The festival’s 2014 lineup hasn’t even filled out too. North Sea Jazz is a music event on a beautiful island.

Budweiser Made In America – late August, Art Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Jay-Z’s creation has emerged as the most anticipated festival in the northeast, even with its own Woodstock-like documentary about the artist and fan experience. Philly is a great city close to every major northeastern city by planes, trains and automobiles. The Art Museum has provided an historic backdrop to artists like Wiz Khalifa, Emeli Sande, Miguel, Kendrick Lamar and – of course – Beyonce. 2014 is guaranteed to duplicate a dynamic slate of artists.
